Xian as a city has the honor of being chosen as the first capital of the unified China. Later it served as capital to the 11 Dynasties, not continuously but periodically. It had this distinction between 11th century BC and 10th century AD.

City has been one of the cradles of the civilization in China. City was ideally located in the plains in Shaanxi province among rivers and mountains. Excavations show life in the region way back 6,000 years ago. In the recent history city was situated on the eastern end of the famous Silk route. Silk route linked China with central Asia and Roman Empire. For thousands of years Chinese silk was transported from this city to the central Asia and Europe.

Although damaged and destroyed by many wars, Xi'an, has surprisingly managed to survive with most of its historical treasures. Xian covers 880 square miles and is home to 3,915,000 people.

To a visitor Xian has much to offer. Historical sites include

• City wall of Xi'an which was re-constructed in the Ming Dynasty
• The Mausoleum of Qin Shi Huang and his Terracotta Army are located 40 km to the east, in the city's suburbs. This monument is one of the most famous historical site in Xian.
• Great Mosque of Xi'an.
• The Big Wild Goose Pagoda and Small Wild Goose Pagoda are both spectacular towers and both are well over 1,000 years old and have survived great earthquakes.
• The Bell Tower and Drum Tower, located at the city centre.
• The Stele Forest is famous for its numerous historic inscriptions and stonework. Also known as Shaanxi Provincial Museum it was founded in 1090 and there are more than 1ooo stele from 8 dynasties. Its great place to study History
• The Neolithic village is located outside the city. Anyone interested in archeology it is must see for you.

May to August is the best season to visit Xian. Autumn is also pleasant in Xian and another good time to visit Xian. City has many shopping centers and large number of places for entertainment. Recreation or culture Xian offers rich treasurers for every visitor.
