Oxford English Dictionary defines career as a course or progress of an individual, through his life. Some take it synonymous with education. However you define it, there are certain remunerative connotations associated with career.

Unless and until one is born with a silver spoon in one’s mouth, one has to earn one’s livelihood at some point in one’s life. Usually what we call career makes an individual capable of earning one’s livelihood. Normally it will take away major chunk of a person’s lifespan. In the modern society, average age of an individual is considered 80 years. Have you ever wondered! Formal education takes anything between 16 to 20 years. That is roughly one quarter on an individual’s life.

What are different types of career? Which career to choose? What are different factors affecting the choice of career? These and similar questions comes to one’s mind when a person starts thinking about one’s career.

Careers can be broadly divided into three generic types

  • Scientific,
  • Artistic and
  • Commercial.

Careers in the scientific category encompass all the careers in the three basic sciences Physics, Chemistry and Biology. All the careers in the realm of science and engineering result from the mingling and mixing of these three basic streams of science, in different proportions. All careers related to medical sciences fall in this category.

Careers in the realm of Art include languages, economics, philosophy, sociology and others. All the careers related to hobbies will usually fall in this broad category. Careers related to law and legal affairs also fall in this category.

Commercial category of careers includes all the careers related to money matters, directly or indirectly. Careers in accounting, sales, marketing, banking and finance fall in this category.

With the phenomenal growth of knowledge in the last few decades, most of the disciplines have grown into cross category disciplines. For example sports used to be artistic in nature. Over the time science and psychology got involved in this discipline. These days’ biophysics, biochemistry, physiotherapy and psychology interact and contribute heavily in the modern day sports.
